Anyone who knows anything about freelance writing for the web knows that a common billing practice is to charge by the word.
And that’s why…
One of the best ways to increase your earnings per hour is to learn to write fast.
And now that we have AI tools for writing, fast writers are becoming even FASTER than before!
But don’t make the mistake of thinking you can just cosy up to your favourite AI tool and become a slick writing machine overnight. That’s not realistic.
To make the most of AI, the first thing you need to do is learn to be an efficient writer on your own.
Why?
Look at this way…
You had to learn to walk before you could run.
You had to learn to do math on your own before they let you use a calculator.
If you’d tried to run before you knew how to walk, or they’d let you skip ahead to using a calculator before learning the basics of math, that wouldn’t have turned out well at all. The same reasoning applies to writing articles fast!
But let me tell you, once you learn to write fast, your earnings per hour can skyrocket!
If your client is paying you $100 to write a 500-word article and it takes you 8 hours to research and write that piece, you earned $12.50 an hour.
But if you could bang out that article in 2 hours, you’d earn $50 per hour.
And in case you think this is unrealistic, here are some real life examples of that principle in action.
4 Articles for $400 (and $50 per hour!)
I once had an order for four 500- to 800-word articles from a client for $400. Because this wasn’t a $30 SEO article client, I put in more than my usual 30 minutes of effort. Instead, I allowed myself 2 hours for each article, and I made $50 an hour on that job.
That was from a few years ago, and to maintain client confidentiality I omitted the exact date and client info. And in this case, the photos I provided were my own – I didn’t have to take new ones because I already had a bunch to choose from in my collection. Anyway, it was a sweet gig for good money on a topic I enjoyed writing about.
My goal was to write fast enough to earn $60 per hour
Students in my Freelance SEO Writing Mastery course have seen my live video recording me writing a 500-word SEO article in only 20 minutes (that includes research, writing, and proofreading). When I’ve written three $20 articles like that for a client, my hourly earnings were $60.
As I gained more experience and confidence, I increased my rates to $30 per 500 words. At that price, I allowed myself 30 minutes per article, which kept me at my $60/hr target wage.
As you probably guessed based on the above, my freelancing focus was on SEO articles because they were quick and easy for me to do. Another reason I focused on that was because it was easier for me to find SEO writing clients compared to $100-an-article clients like that other guy. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on your level of freelancing experience.
Now imagine seeing this order appear in your inbox, as it did for me in February 2020:
If the client pays $30 each for 50 articles, you’d earn a total of $1500.
If it took you four hours to write each article you’d make $6.67 per hour.
But if it took you only one hour to write each article, you’d make $30 per hour.
And if you could pull off writing each article in only 30 minutes, you’d make a whopping $60 per hour.
That is why writing faster tends to mean higher hourly earnings.
With enough practice – and focusing on the right things – it’s pretty much a certainty that your speed will go up. And when that happens, your hourly earnings as a writer will go up along with it.
The key is to learn how to write an article fast, without sacrificing quality
Writing fast will only increase your hourly earnings if the quality of your writing remains high… because clients and readers aren’t interested in lousy content.
But if you follow the right process, you can definitely learn how to write fast.
If you already have a method that works for you, keep at it. But if you’re looking for ideas…
