Watch this video and learn about the 3 important things that you absolutely MUST include in your UpWork profile.
(Video transcript is below, in case you prefer reading to watching video.)
Hey, it’s Avery. This week’s question comes from Demi. Demi is from the UK, and wanted to know a couple of things that will apply to all of you, no matter where you’re from. The first thing Demi wanted to know is how to set up a profile on Upwork. It’s actually really easy to do, so don’t let it intimidate you.
Does it matter what country you’re from?
Part of her question as well, though, had to do with the fact that she’s from the UK, and she wanted to know if this process will still work. The answer is absolutely yes, as long as you are from a native English-speaking country, whether it be Canada, the United States, Australia, the UK, or New Zealand. Writers from all of those countries are in demand. Why? Because you’re native English speakers, and everybody wants native English speakers. Okay, well maybe not everybody, but a lot of clients.
How to set up your Upwork profile, and what to put in it
Now that we have that established, the fact that you’re a native English speaker, the question is how do you set up your Upwork profile? That’s actually not as hard as it seems, even though I know from experience when you’re first starting out, it seems like a tall mountain to climb, because you don’t have experience, you have no credentials, and yet, you want people to hire you as a writer.
Here’s what you do. Number one, if you’re a native English speaker, you’ve got to say so in your profile. Make a point of calling that out, so that people notice. Number two, if you’re good at proofreading, say that too. Why? Because so many writers are sloppy with proofreading, and clients hate having to pay good money for an article that they can’t publish right away because there’s all kinds of mistakes in it they have to fix. Number three, if you are good at meeting deadlines, you have to tell clients that, too. If you’re not good at deadlines, make the decision now that from now on, you are good at deadlines. Now you can put that in your profile.
Bonus tips for setting up your Upwork profile
Now it’s time for bonus tips, other things you can do to make your Upwork profile even more attractive to clients, despite the fact that you have no experience. First of all, Upwork will give you the opportunity to write a bunch of tests on their platform to prove that you can spell, that you can proofread, and that you can write. Take the time to go over the tests they offer, and write as many of them as you can.
Finally, the last thing I suggest you do is you go through the profiles of other writers on Upwork that seem to be doing well on the platform. Go through their profiles and look for ideas and inspiration, and things you might be able to mention in your own profile that apply to you as well.
Summing up
I hope you found this helpful. Now do remember, if you have more questions, hit the reply button to the email that you got to announce this video, and send me your questions, or you could leave questions in the comments to this video. I will read them all, and whatever seems to be the most common question, I’ll answer in next week’s video. Have a great week. Get started, take some action setting up your profile, and I wish you all the best of luck. Bye.

I took a day of vacation from work (I have two full time jobs) today and made this an “Avery Day”. I read everything I could find on YouTube, FB, and every other place on the internet where you are listed by Google . It was, (in my less than humble opinion) the wisest INVESTMENT of time I have made in many years. You are the poster child for a number of commonly used be less commonly practiced phrases such as:
NEVER Give Up
You Can Do This
Do or do not there is no try (the Yoda quote from your budget book)
You can’t finish unless you start’
AND MY FAVORITE (which you never used but could have)
You Really Don’t Want to Trade Sob Stories With Me./
Wishing you and your family all the Universe has to offer you
I remain,
Your Friend

You’re too kind. And I wish you and yours all the best too! 🙂
re: sob story
Nah, I could easily be beat 😉 because despite the crappy things that have happened in my life, I’m lucky enough to have a lot of things going for me that others don’t…
I was lucky enough to be born into a relatively wealthy country, I have good parents (whereas some people are unlucky and end up with abusive really messed up parents, which can screw them up into adulthood), no wars where I live (ex. I’m not being run out of my own country by crazies hell bent on killing everyone), I’m not dying young (as far as I know), and plenty of food to go around (no famine). And I have all my limbs. I could go on and on hehe 🙂
