Hey, it’s Avery. This week’s question comes from Demi. Demi is from the U.K., and wanted to know a couple of things that will apply to all of you, no matter where you’re from. First thing Demi wanted to know is how to set up a profile on Upwork. It’s actually really easy to do, so don’t let it intimidate you.
Does it matter what country you’re from?
Part of her question as well, though, had to do with the fact that she’s from the U.K., and wanted to know if this process will still work. The answer is absolutely yes, as long as you are from a native English-speaking country, whether it be Canada, the United States, Australia, the U.K., New Zealand. Writers from all of those countries are in demand. Why? Because you’re native English speakers, and everybody wants native English speakers. Okay, well maybe not everybody, but a lot of clients.
How to set up your Upwork profile, and what to put in it
Now that we have that established, the fact that you’re a native English speaker, the question is how do you set up your Upwork profile? That’s actually not as hard as it seems, even though I know from experience when you’re first starting out, it seems like a tall mountain to climb, because you don’t have experience, you have no credentials, and yet, you want people to hire you as a writer.
Here’s what you do. Number one, if you’re a native English speaker, in your profile, you’ve got to say so. Make a point of calling that out, so that people notice. Number two, if you’re good at proofreading, say that too. Why? Because so many writers are sloppy with proofreading, and clients hate having to pay good money for an article that they can’t publish right away, because there’s all kinds of mistakes in it that they have to fix. Number three, if you are good at meeting deadlines, you have to tell clients that. If you’re not good at deadlines, make the decision now that from now on, you are good at deadlines. Now you can put that in your profile.
Bonus tips for setting up your Upwork profile
Now it’s time for bonus tips, other things you can do to make your Upwork profile even more attractive to clients, despite the fact that you have no experience. First of all, Upwork will give you the opportunity to write a bunch of tests on their platform that will prove that you can spell, that you can proofread, and that you can write. Take the time to go over the tests that they offer, and write as many of them as you can.
Finally, the last thing I suggest you do is you go through the profiles of other writers on Upwork that seem to be doing well on the platform. Go through their profiles and look for ideas and inspiration, and things that you might be able to mention in your profile that apply to you as well.
